In some areas it was performed by girls during spring calls; a mandatory attribute was birch branches, which the performers held in their hands. Also known as a couples village dance, not associated with a ritual action. The characteristic elements of the dance are simple steps in a circle and the simultaneous squatting of all performers to a certain beat of the music.
Usually on Semik or Trinity, after performing the rite of ritual in the grove, the girls dispersed to “curl a wreath.” After this, they gathered around some birch tree and began to dance around it in a “round dance with a ribbon” (“round dance with a belt”). They took one long ribbon or ribbon and tied its ends. Then they each tied their own ribbon to this ribbon. It turned out something like a sun with long multi-colored rays. Then they stood so that the ends of the ribbons were stretched. The girls held the ribbon with one hand, and in the other there was always a tree branch. The girls, singing, began to move smoothly in a circle, lowering and raising alternately ribbons and twigs.
The songs in each locality could be different, but always about the birch tree:
Curly birch, Curly, youthful, Under you, birch, It is not the poppy that is blooming, Under you, birch, It is not the fire that is burning, It is not the poppy that is blooming - Red girls stand in a round dance, It is about you, birch, They sing all the songs.
In the Irkutsk region, the ornamental round dance began with the arrangement of the place. Three birch trees were chosen in the clearing, between which they danced in a circle, or they were replaced by three girls. The driver chose the drawing herself. As they danced, they changed their designs. The main move is a variable step of 2/4 beats or a simple step of 1/4 beats. The dance is accompanied by numerous and varied choruses. In the Minsk region, the dance accompanied the game “Tereshka’s Marriage”.
"Birch". The Mystery of the Floating Step
A dance group recognized as a national treasure. The choreographic ensemble “Berezka” has been telling the world with its dance for almost 70 years what beauty is in Russian. Interesting facts from the history of the legendary band were collected by Natalya Letnikova.

1. Round dance as high art . A simple girl's circle is the pinnacle of choreographic skill. The ensemble “Beryozka” first “floated” across the stage to the music “A Birch Tree Stood in the Field” in 1948. Since then, the poetry of the ancient Russian round dance and the image of a Russian girl have been a distinctive feature of the group.
2. Success from the first step . To meet its audience, “Beryozka” needed to go on stage only once. Success came to the team after the first concert in the capital - at the Hermitage Theater. And for the first time, 16 young collective farmers of the Kalinin region performed their famous round dance at a rural talent festival.
3. Girls from the picture . The founder of the group, ballerina and choreographer Nadezhda Nadezhdina, saw the future “Berezka” as a child. The girls in sundresses with birch branches depicted in an ancient lithograph became a dream - to bring Russian round dance to the big stage. Create a truly unique dance based on folk dance.

4. The image of a birch tree is copied from nature . Sundress to the floor. The basis of the costume in which the signature number is performed. The long suit hides their legs, and the girls seem to float across the stage. A white blouse with a lace “window” on the sleeve, a sky-blue scarf in one hand and a green birch branch in the other add tenderness.
5. Peace Medal . “You don’t need to read two hundred volumes about Russia, just watch one concert of “Berezka”, and you will see what Russian character, Russian character, Russian beginning are...” wrote the French press after the ensemble’s tour in Paris. The World Peace Council awarded the team its gold medal in 1959.
6. 80 countries . The Russian “Berezka” has visited almost all continents. She walked thousands of kilometers with her mysterious steps through the scenes of Japan, France, Argentina, Switzerland, Korea, and the USA. She performed in the most extreme conditions: for example, in Greece, in the heat of 40 degrees, she danced “Maslenitsa” in sheepskin coats, hats and felt boots.

7. 16 years of wandering . Already known throughout the world, the group rehearsed for a long time on rented sites: on the ice floor in the Hammer and Sickle House of Culture, in a hall on Volgogradsky Prospekt. The team received its current premises in Leontyevsky Lane personally from Vladimir Putin. The President saw Berezka perform in China.
8. The Berezka costumes weigh about two and a half tons. During two hours of round dances and round dances, the girls change sundresses and hats more than 20 times. In total, the team has about two thousand costumes. Each is a real work of art made of velvet, chiffon, lace or batik, embroidered with braid and beads.
Stage version
A stage version was created based on folk dance. In this case, women perform it in pseudo-Russian costumes, stylized as Nizhny Novgorod girls' clothes (jacket, sundress, kokoshnik or scarf), with their hair tied in a braid. The movements are smooth in a circle, in a round dance, in a chain (one after another), in a snake, in two lines, rotating around each other or in pairs around common centers in groups. There are no leg swings. The steps are not wide and frequent, creating the impression of gliding (“like a swan swimming”). The dancers hold handkerchiefs or birch branches in their hands, which can symbolize farewell to spring (see Trinity Birch). The general mood of the dance is melancholic.
